Under the TV or above it

Most bars sit just under the screen. The bar's height must clear the TV's lowest edge and its remote sensor, and a TV on a tilting mount may need the bar a little farther down. Over the screen is the other option, used when the TV sits on a low cabinet or a fireplace wall.

Position Works when Check
Under the TV The bar and the TV share a flat wall Remote sensor not blocked
Above the TV The TV sits low on a cabinet Bar is not too high for its sound
On a shelf below The wall can't carry two items Shelf anchored in studs

Studs for the bar bracket

A soundbar is lighter than a TV, but it still hangs on screws in the wall, and drywall alone is a poor anchor for something a child can pull on. The bracket is set on a stud or on a rated anchor for its weight, with the position chosen against the same stud map used for the TV. In older Garden Grove homes with plaster, the bracket's screws go into the studs behind it, because plaster over lath is brittle and holds screws badly.

A soundbar on its own bracket under the TV. A soundbar on its own bracket, fixed to studs, hangs a short even gap below the screen so the TV mount does not carry it.

What the numbers show

  1. Own bracket The bar hangs from its own bracket whose screws enter studs, not from the TV mount.
  2. Even gap A steady gap keeps the bar clear of the lower edge of the TV and of its tilt travel.
  3. Center line The bar is centered on the screen so the sound lines up with the picture.
  4. Short cables An HDMI lead and the bar power run a short way behind the bar.

ARC, eARC and the cable that carries the sound

The cleanest setup is one HDMI cable from the TV's ARC or eARC port to the bar, so the TV remote controls the volume and one cable carries the picture and the sound back. The installer finds the right port on the back, because only one HDMI input is labeled ARC on most TVs. If the bar is optical-only, a short digital audio cable does the job at slightly lower quality. Cords are routed with the TV's own cable path, in the same raceway or in-wall rated run.

Rear speakers and neighbors

Rear speakers sit on shelves or small wall brackets near the sofa, with a thin cable run along the baseboard or in a raceway so no one trips on it. A wireless subwoofer sits on the floor, away from a shared wall, because bass travels into a neighbor's home through a thin partition. In a condo or apartment, ask what the quiet hours are and keep the volume reasonable.

Soundbar and Surround Setup — common questions

Does a soundbar need its own outlet?

Yes, most bars plug into the wall, so it needs to be near an outlet or on the same strip as the TV.

What does mounting a soundbar cost?

About $50–$80 on top of the TV mount in 2026, when it is done in the same visit.
