What taking a TV down involves
The steps are short, but the order matters. The TV is unplugged, the cables are labeled and freed, and the set is lifted off the bracket with a second person or a lift for anything large. The bracket is then either left in place for the next TV, unbolted and kept, or removed with its lag bolts.
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Photograph the cable layout | So the new setup is plugged back the same way |
| Lift the TV off the plate | Two people for a big screen |
| Remove or keep the bracket | Depends on the next TV |
| Check the holes | Decide what to do with them |
What is left behind
A mount held by lag bolts leaves holes, usually four to six, a few inches across. They are not magically invisible. Filling and painting is a separate step: some owners do it themselves, some hire a painter and some tenants agree with the landlord on what to do. The installer fills holes only when it has been agreed ahead of the visit, and the finished wall depends on the paint and the patch material.
Moving a TV to another room
A relocation is a take-down plus a new mount, and the new wall decides the price. A move from drywall to a plaster den adds $25–$45; a move to a block garage wall adds $55–$95. The mount often comes along, as long as it fits the new TV and wall, and a bracket that fit a 40-inch set may be too small for the 65-inch set that replaces it. The installer checks the rating and the hole pattern before reusing it.
Renters and leases
Before a TV comes off a rented wall, or a new one goes on, read the lease. Many landlords restrict wall holes, and some ask for them to be patched when the tenant leaves. Ask in writing and keep the reply. If holes are not allowed, a freestanding stand is the easy route; if they are, the plan includes who fills them and when.
TV Dismount and Relocation — common questions
What does taking down a TV cost?
About $40–$80 on top of the mount price in 2026 when it is done in the same visit.
Will the wall look the same afterward?
Not until the holes are filled and the spot repainted; the mount leaves them, and filling is a separate agreed step.
